I had the good fortune to catch a Norman Rockwell exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis several years ago. Regrettably, like most of my hundreds of thousands of DSLR shots from those years, I don’t think I still have any photos of it.

Anyway, this long piece on Rockwell’s transformation from Americana nostalgia to social activism caught my eye this evening. Worth a read.

Somehow I had never noticed the slur on the wall in The Problem We All Live With .

The reactions to that issue of Look are, sadly, not terribly dissimilar from some of today’s angrier voices.

And I was wholly unaware of Murder in Mississippi , which the article discusses at length but doesn’t include, I suspect due to copyright.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Rockwell exhibit at the Children’s Museum didn’t have that one.

There’s a great post on Metafilter about this, currently. I read through it yesterday. I’ve always loved Rockwell’s work. He came to admire all the kids whom he and his generation didn’t understand. He was legitimately great.
